Unique Norwich church celebrates its 250th

OctagonChapelOne of  Norwich’s most unique church buildings will be opening its doors to the public to celebrate its 250th anniversary from May 12-14.

The Octagon Unitarian Chapel in Colegate will play host to a special anniversary weekend from Friday, May 12 to Sunday, May 14.

The building, designed by Thomas Ivory, has played a big role in Norwich’s history, with Martineau, Mottram, Bolingbroke and Dowson all connected with the Octagon.

The anniversary weekend is being marked with a number of events including a celebration concert and visitors will also be welcomed to the Chapel to look round the unusual building.

The Chapel will be open from 10am to 4pm on May 12 and 13. There will also be Unitarian display boards, books, flowers arrangements, craft displays and commemorative mugs for sale. Admission is free.

Then on Sunday, May 14 at 11am, a special anniversary service will be taken by Sophia Hankinson, called A Family Celebration. She will be talking about families who have been associated with the Octagon over the years. The Chapel will remain open until around 4pm.

At 7.30pm, there will be a celebration concert introduced by Alan Spoors, it will be performed by the Octagon Singers with an invited orchestra. Chapel regular Mary Rae will be conducting the choir and orchestra.
