Christian charity says farewell to volunteers

Jan MillerA memorial service was held on Wednesday July 24 for Jan Miller, a dedicated volunteer at The Magdalene Group. A farewell service was also held for other longstanding volunteers at the Norwich charity.

Jan Miller, pictured right, served over 12 years with The Magdalene Group, a Christian charity that helps sex workers in Norfolk. Jan died of cancer earlier in the year. Jan worked on a beautiful tapestry for the “Epiphany” Exhibition at Norwich Cathedral Hostry.

Nik Miller her husband has donated this beautiful piece to ‘the sitting room’ the charity's drop-in resource on King Street in Norwich. The tapestry will be unveiled at 2pm on Wednesday 24th July in celebration of her life and love that she showed to all at The Magdalene Group.

Jan’s tapestry with the words ‘loved’ ‘changed’  was inspired by a poem by Valerie Budd which says so much about her own life and what she longed for, for those helped by The Magdalene Group.

On the same day The Magdalene Group said farewell to two other longstanding Volunteers Sally Clarke who has served 11 years and Trixie Dye who has served 8. Their love and patience has been remarkable and always ready to engage with the women who use the project whether it was swimming, reading the water meter, having a game of scrabble or just being there to offer a coffee and a hug.

Suzi Heybourne Director of The Magdalene Group said ‘Jan’s love shaped the very nature of the Magdalene Group, and I inherited from her the love and compassion that is central to all that we do here.  Sally and Trixie have just been amazing, diligent, committed and offering ongoing support year after year to some of the most vulnerable women in Norwich. They are well loved by the women who use our services."
