Be a pane to raise funds for Norwich church

ChristChurchEatonWestEndWindowChrist Church, Eaton in Norwich is launching its ‘Be a Pane’ campaign on Easter Sunday to help raise £250,000 for much needed repairs to its windows and improvements to its facilities.

On Sunday March 31, Christ Church, Eaton will launch its ‘Be a Pane’ campaign to raise £65,000 for repairs to the majority of the church windows and £185,000 for other developments to its facilities.

The campaign will particularly focus on the stained glass west window (pictured) which was inserted in 1918. The window was designed by Arthur A. Orr of Harrow and celebrated the golden wedding of the Norwich industrialist, John Joseph Dawson Paul.

The 'Be a Pane' campaign has divided the windows into sections, each with a target value attached to it. All donations are very welcome with panes in the windows in the north and south aisles available to be sponsored for as little as £1 each.

Once the work is complete, each sponsor will receive a certificate with a photograph description of its meaning and the name of the sponsor. A book will also be produced with a copy of all the certificates, including the names of everyone who donated to the appeal.

The Vicar of Christ Church, Rev Dr Patrick Richmond, said: “I’m so grateful to all those who have put together this campaign, and to those who have already made significant pledges. Having spent all our reserves last year repairing the flint work, roof and guttering, we need our community to help save the windows, which are literally buckling under their own weight. I’m hopeful that many will want to be a pane when it comes to their local church!”

Other proposed developments include a new, disabled-friendly toilet; a new kitchen to enable light refreshments to be served after services and functions; opening up further 'social' space in the church, as well as a complete overhaul of the church organ.

The church building is widely used by the community for concerts to school events, and it’s hoped that the improvements will benefit all.

If you wish to find out more or to donate there will be a display and forms in Christ Church from Easter Sunday.  You can also donate online and via their website at
