Norwich chef Chris cooks up charitable ride

with a 144-mile ride along Hadrian’s Wall
to mark his 44th birthday.
Chris, who is the chef at the UEA Nursery cooking for 70 children per day, also worships at Norwich Vineyard church and cycles everywhere he goes.
He will be joining 14 other cyclists in Whitehaven on May 30 to ride 144 miles along the Hadrian’s Wall cycleway in support of Toybox, a charity working with abandoned street children in the poorest parts of Latin America.
“This will actually be the furthest I have cycled in one day,” said Chris. “The route skirts around the west of the Lakes, picking up the route of Hadrian's Wall around Carlisle, and following as nearly as possible on quiet roads and cycle paths.
“I have been practising by stringing together climbs of Ketts Hill, Gas Hill, Harvey Lane and around that area in repeated ascents to reach a total of about 240m climbing in one session. The trip is based on an average speed over the day of 12mph, so we are expecting 10-12 hours cycling.
“This is not just masochism, its all for a good cause. Toybox is a charity I have supported for some years now,” said Chris. “We are each aiming to raise £1000 and have also paid our own money to get ourselves to the start and finish and for accommodation.”
“I got to know about Toybox years ago when involved in running the exhibition at Living Water. They are a Christian charity that run homes and support work for street children in Guatamala City initially, but are now spreading further afield in Latin America. They used to and still do sell hand-made crafts from South America to raise money and run a child sponsorship scheme.”
After 10 years as a house husband, artist, and passionate amateur chef, Chris took to professional cookery in 2005 at the age of 39, gaining distinctions in professional qualifications, winning national awards for his work and producing a cookbook which won the first Organix prize for a nursery recipe book, presented to Chris by chef Paul Rankin

Chris also runs courses on general cooking for beginners, and meat-free cooking, and also runs special ticket-only restaurant nights at venues around Norwich. www.chriscooks.co.uk
Chris has even been known to combine his passions for cooking and cycling both at the same time, such as recently when he cooked dozens of pancakes for a Haiti fundraiser on Shrove Tuesday at Norwich Gateway Vineyard church (pictured right), and flipped them while riding a unicycle.
