Norfolk joins largest ever global wave of prayer

By Keith Morris

2009: Hundreds of Christians from dozens of churches across Norfolk joined the world’s largest-ever prayer meeting on Sunday May 31 as part of the Global Day of Prayer.

Norwich Cathedral saw around 400 people join together in praise and prayer in a service opened by pastor Trevor Pimlott of Norwich Family Life Church and the Very Red Graham Smith, Dean of the Cathedral.

Included amongst those taking part were Bishop Graham of Norwich and Bishop Michael of East Anglia and Norwich as well as leaders from local Anglican, Baptist, Methodist and Pentecostal churches.

GDOPprayer1webIt was all part of a now annual event which from the Rising of the Sun in New Zealand to the Setting of the Same in the Solomon Islands united millions of Christians from around 220 countries right across the world in prayer including around 80 events in the UK aloneS in gatherings at football stadiums, arenas, homes, churches and parks.

Norwich administrator, Hilary Oliver, said: “The people of Norfolk gathered in Norwich Cathedral to join their prayers and voices to the millions and millions who joined in a great wave of prayer which started in New Zealand, rolled across Australia, Asia and the Middle East before reaching Europe and then going on to North and South America and ending as the sun set in the islands of the Pacific.

Hilary said: “During the Norwich event, and to give the children understanding of what is happening, there was a separate children’s programme for children aged 5 to 11 in another building close by. The children were learning about prayer, composing their own prayers and doing lots of fun things. They also joined in the main event in the Cathedral to give a presentation including a special children’s choir and some interesting prayers.”
