Community Chaplaincy Norfolk holds mentoring course

Norwich Prison 2012 376 ARCommunity Chaplaincy Norfolk is launching their latest Volunteer Mentoring course for all those interested in offering extra support to ex-offenders as they leave prison.

The chaplaincy is a service for men in Norfolk prisons – either Norwich, pictured, or Wayland – and works in conjunction with Christian charity The House of Genesis. It aims to assist men to make the step from prison to life outside in a positive way, and thus help to reduce reoffending rates in Norfolk.

Community Chaplaincies operate throughout the country and are staffed by volunteers who offer a variety of advice to people trying to sort their lives out, including addiction issues, medical problems, benefits and relationship advice. Practical needs are also addressed through the distribution of foodbank vouchers and small toiletry packs etc.

“Many people leave prison never wanting to return, but the challenges of everyday life are hard” explained Susan Carne, Project Coordinator. “I need more mentors for people coming out of prison and would like to see a few more on our third training course”.

The Volunteer Mentoring Course starts on Monday October 2 and runs from 7pm to 9.30pm each Monday until November 13.

Topics covered will be:

  • Session One: DEFINITIONS - Together We Can Make a Difference
  • Session Two: THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM - Speaking the Same Language
  • Session Three: COMMUNICATING FOR A CHANGE - Remember the Beach Ball
  • Session Four: DO’S AND DON’TS - Stay Safe, Stay Effective
  • Session Five: THE THEORY OF CHANGE - It’s hard, but it is possible
  • Session Six: GOAL SETTING - Hope makes  anything  possible
