Barton Turf church secures grant for repairs

Barton Turf church has received a lottery grant which will enable essential repairs to be carried out.

The parish church of St Michael and All Angels in Barton Turf in the Norfolk Broads has received the grant, amounting to £134,200, from the Heritage Lottery Fund for necessary structural repairs to protect the medieval rood screen.  This will entail re-roofing the north aisle and north porch, replacing rainwater goods, making good the interior plaster damager and re-decorating.

The grant will also enable the church to refurbish the unused parvise room above the north porch in order to create a resource and archive centre with IT facilities.  A research team will then be set up to investigate further the history of the church and the story of the rood screen.  Also planned is an update of the website, new guide books and workshops for children.

Barton Turf rood screen 300ATSt Michael and All Angels, dating from the 14th century has one of the best preserved medieval rood screens in Norfolk, right.  The painted panels on the 15th century chancel screen depict the Nine Orders of Angels, one of the finest representations of the Heavenly Hierarchy in English Medieval art.

Churchwarden Barbara Pilcher said, “We are delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has given us this grant.  Not only will we be able to protect this significant piece of our heritage but we will be able to update our visitor information and continue to make the church a welcoming centre for the village.”
