David Kingsley Lloyd remembran

Gorleston service to remember David Kingsley Lloyd

Around 60 former members of Gorleston Crusaders got together to pay tribute and share memories of the Bible class founded by popular Technical High (later Oriel) School religious education and games teacher David Kingsley Lloyd who died in September at the age of 82.

David was widely remembered and loved not just as the founder of the highly influential Crusader group but also for the school Christian Union surfing holidays he ran in Cornwall and winter skiing trips to Austria as well as actively encouraging both rugby and cricket.

The event was organized at Gorleston Baptist Church by pastor Paul Smith who, with his wife Jan and so many others came to Christian faith through the influence and work of Mr Lloyd. Many spoke of the way he encouraged people into leadership and speaking roles including Sue Cramp who after a career in teaching trained for the Anglican ministry, serving with her husband in South Norfolk. The main speaker was well known Bible teacher and evangelist Eddie Vass whose long ministry also began with Mr Lloyd encouraging him to speak and then to become padre at the holidays in Cornwall and Austria.

Eddie Vass described Mr Lloyd as ‘incomparable’ and spoke of his total dedication and selflessness. Another former Crusader Brian Philpot told how his parents, who were asked to help with catering at a Crusader weekend at Thurne were encouraged back to church and Christian faith by Mr Lloyd. There was a long and very moving standing ovation from all those who attended, some having travelled a great distance including Mr Lloyd’s eldest son Hugh who was touched by the enormous affection, appreciation and respect shown towards his father.
