Sheringham Methodists' famous flower festival
Flower arrangers from towns and villages all over North Norfolk are busily planning for arguably the district’s premier flower festival, which takes place at St Andrews Methodist Church in Sheringham from Thursday July 7 to Sunday July 10.
The annual festival, which has run for over 40 years, is a major event for both the church and the town, and regularly attracts over 3000 visitors with several coach parties and many planning their holidays around the festival dates.
Each year the flower arrangers design their floral displays to a specific theme with exceptional attention to detail and creativity. Last year’s theme was “A touch of wonder” and the pictures “Ride on a Steam Train” (above) and “A Mothers Touch” (right) illustrate just how cleverly they interpret the theme.
This year’s theme is “I AM” and over 25 arrangements will depict this theme with titles such as I AM going to the zoo, I AM a fisherman and I AM a bake off contestant. Throughout the Festival background music, played mainly by organists, will add to the ambiance of the event.
Visitors will also be able to browse the many stalls offering a superb variety of plants, jigsaws, books, arts & crafts, souvenirs and gifts, jewellery, Christian books, Traidcraft quality bric-a-brac, a raffle, quality cards and various quizzes. There will also be a children’s activity area (arts and crafts) outside school hours on Thursday and Friday and all day Saturday. Light lunches, cream teas and an extensive choice of cakes will also be on offer.
Entry to the festival is free but donations are gratefully accepted. Proceeds from the festival go to church funds but each year a sizeable donation is given to a local charity which this year is the Nook Appeal for EACH (East Anglia Children’s Hospice).
The festival will be open from 10.00am to 5pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 12 noon to 4pm on Sunday. The café closes each day at 4pm. St Andrews is wheelchair friendly and has disabled toilet facilities. It is on Cromer Road in Sheringham, NR26 8SA.
Festival Worship is at 10.30am on the Sunday morning, with a Communion service at 9.15am on the Friday.
