Edith Cavell inspired quilts at Wroxham

Wroxham quilt 2 405CFA display of quilts depicting the life of Norfolk heroine Edith Cavell will be on display at Wroxham Library later this month. Tony Rothe reports.

‘Sew Spiritual’ is a group of eleven Norfolk women from various Christian traditions who have joined together to explore their faith by interpreting the scriptures through the medium of textiles to create quilts. They share their knowledge, skills, and experiences of their faith journeys, and aim to encourage each other by keeping in touch by email and occasionally meeting together. Each year they focus on a different theme and exhibit the quilts as a way of sharing their faith with those who visit the exhibitions.

In 2012, during a meeting in the home of Jan Miller, one of the members, the group was asked to take part in the 100th anniversary commemorations of the execution of Edith Cavell in Belgium during the First World War. Martyred nurse Edith Cavell  was inspired by her faith, and in her last days read a copy of “The Imitation of Christ” by Thomas a Kempis. She was greatly influenced by that book and annotated various passages in her copy whilst in prison awaiting trial and execution.

The Sew Spiritual ladies have used the passages she underlined as an inspiration for a series of beautifully embroidered quilt panels celebrating her life, and these have been on display at several Norfolk venues over the last two years.

Wroxham quilt 1 390CFThe group will be speaking about the exhibition at Wroxham Library at 2pm on Saturday January 16, and the panels themselves will be on display in the library from January 16-23.  Sew Spiritual will be available every day to discuss the quilts, what they do, and their Christian faith.

Alongside the exhibition, the library has a collection of books about Edith Cavell, Thomas a Kempis, and Julian of Norwich which are free to borrow.

Wroxham Library is open from 10am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, with late night opening on Friday until 8pm.
