Church ladies football team issues challenge
A Norwich church has established a ladies football team that is growing from strength to strength. From humble beginnings in the church hall, the team has grown to around 20 regular players at training sessions. The team is keen to play other church teams from around Norfolk and challenges other teams to take part in a football festival this October.
The Norwich Central Baptist Church (NCBC) ladies team was established nearly two years ago with players of all ages and abilities taking part for a variety of reasons – for fun and fitness as well as to play in competitive matches. The team has been coached during this time by Pete Barry and have gained in confidence and skill and is ready to take on other local church teams.
NCBC Ladies have played several matches against teams from UEA medics and UEA Christian Union and they took part in their first tournament earlier in the summer at Regent's Park in London against other ladies church teams. Many of the team members attend Norwich Central Baptist Church or have links through the men’s and youth teams. The team is very sociable and growing all the time and is a good way of getting people involved in the church.
Coach Pete Barry said, “The team trains every Monday night where we practice ball skills, work on our fitness and play a game but next season we like to step up a gear and play a few matches against other teams in Norfolk and look at getting some regular fixtures in the calendar.”
Nicki Collins, one of the players who is organising the football festival said, “The purpose of the tournament is to have fun and play some friendly games. We’d like to have the chance to play more teams during the season – so if there are any churches out there who would like to play, please get in touch and take us on!”
Football Festival
The aim of the festival is to have fun and enjoy some friendly 7-a-side matches. The date is set for 3rd October from 10.30am – 1pm at Thorpe St Andrew High School. Matches will be played on astroturf and last 15 minutes each. Players must be aged 16 or over. It will cost £5 per player to enter which will cover the cost of the pitch and a donation to Children in Need.
